Nutrition Basics for Junior Hockey Players
Think of hockey players as high-performance automobiles and food as the fuel that drives their performance. Far too often, players run out of gas during a game after having lunch at a fast-food restaurant or forgetting to eat breakfast.

To achieve maximum performance levels on the ice, young hockey players must follow a well-balanced, nutritious diet throughout the year. It is essential to educate individual players about the importance of nutrition and to provide them with nutritional strategies to help them make good food choices. Nutrition Training for Young Hockey Players has been designed by Ontario Hockey to provide this training, helping young players gain a better understanding of the connection between nutrition and sports performance.
Through completion of this online course, participants will learn:
The course is presented in 4-modules. At the end of each module, participants must take a test to verify their understanding of the content. They cannot proceed to the next module until a score of 100% has been achieved, but they can review the module content and re-take the test as many times as necessary in order to pass. Test questions are randomly selected from a ‘test bank’ to ensure that each testing experience is unique. When the participant has passed each module test, he or she can download/print a Certificate of Completion. This document includes the name of the participant and the date of training.
Nutrition Training for Young Hockey Players is a self-paced learning experience. This means that participants can move from one screen to the next at whatever pace best matches their learning style and their prior knowledge of the material. Participants can also stop training at any time and can resume later, where they left off. The timeline for completion can therefore vary greatly from one person to another. On average, most participants will be able to complete the course within one hour .
This project consumed a huge amount of work, research and dedication. Still, implementation would not have been possible if we did not have the support of many individuals. Therefore we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of them.
The Ontario Hockey Association and its members are very thankful to Lisa Spott for providing the necessary guidance concerning this projects development.
We are grateful to Lisa for providing her expertise and support in the implementation. Without her superior knowledge and experience, the project would lack in quality, and thus her support has been essential.
We would also like to thank the Trillium Foundation for its support of this project.
